Get current MASTER VOLUME level

Hello,
After spending HOURS yesterday researching this seemingly trivial task, I still do not have a clean method of determining the current MASTER volume setting - I'm on Windows 7 x64. There are several very old posts suggesting methods which didn't work on Win 7. There are other suggestions of using a class that is 100s of lines long (and still did not work). Finally there was the odd suggestion of downloading a 3rd party DLL which might work. I am baffled at the difficulty of something I thought would be easy. When I hover my mouse pointer over the volume control in the Notification Area, it shows me that my volume is at 43% ("Speakers: 43%"). That is the number I want to get within my VB.Net app.

Over the years, many people have asked this same question - repeatedly. Several answers show how to change the volume (or mute) which is much easier, however getting the current volume setting is elusive.

My hope is that a programmer who has gone down this road, and succeeded, will have an answer for us all.
With thanks.
Mike
